- They were fighting in their own territory which meant they knew the territory and they had people that would help soldiers hide at night.
- They had experienced military leaders like Albert Johnston, Joesph Johnston, and Robert E. Lee.

- They would just defend their land until the north got tired of fighting and went home.
- They wanted and expected help from the European nations and Britain (they didn't want to help because they had just recently gotten rid of slavery).

Southern states attacked Fort Sumter because they no longer wanted to be part of the union, they wanted to secede because they thought because they sighed the American Constitution voluntarily they could secede whenever they liked. They also attacked Fort Sumter because they feared that Abraham Lincoln was going to abolish slavery and the south relaid on slavery the slaves were the ones who did all of the farm work.
