The modern civil war that we have decided to compare and contrast the American Civil War is the Congo Civil War.
The American Civil War was fought in the United States (the North vs. the South, but it was mainly fought in the South) from 1861-1865. It was fought because the South wanted to secede (leave) the Union because they were afraid that slavery was going to be abolished.
The Congo War is currently being fought in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by Ugandan and Rwandan forces, Laurent Kabila's government, and the the countries of Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, and Burundi. It is being fought because, according to USA Today, the rebels want to secede because their government is corrupt.
Some similarities between these two are that both wars can and will change their future, both of these events are considered civil wars, many people have died because of these civil wars, and there are at least two sides to the war that are fighting each other.
